Luis Merren

During the summer of 1949 in El Progress, Honduras, C.A., Luis A. Merren Jr. was born to a Merchant Marine father and a school teacher mother. The eldest of three sons, Mr. Merren emigrated with his family from Roatan Island, Honduras, C.A. to the Texas Gulf Coast in 1957. Mr. Merren went on to attend Bishop Byrne High School where he proved to be an outstanding athlete, excelling in baseball and football. After high school, Mr. Merren had a successful tenure as a Political Science major at Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas from which he graduated in 1972. A grant to attend Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas precipitated Mr. Merren’s next venture – a Masters degree in Public Administration, which he received in 1973. During his studies at SMU, Mr. Merren also served as a Juvenile Department consultant for the Dallas Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division. Soon thereafter, Mr. Merren matriculated at Texas Southern University’s Thurgood Marshall School of Law. An esteemed member of the Law Review serving as a Case Note Editor and Managing Editor, Mr. Merren was a Cum Laude honor graduate of the Class of 1978 and received the 1978 Topic Hispanic Graduate Award.

Following graduation, Mr. Merren entered the Dallas District Attorney’s office as an Assistant District Attorney the same year upon a recommendation from the Dallas Police Department. In 1981, Mr. Merren opened his sole Criminal Defense practice with three locations in Texas: Dallas, Beaumont, and Houston. In the mid 1980’s, Mr. Merren commenced an association with New York attorneys, Jose Muniz and Walter Rivera, consulting in high profile narcotics matters. During this time, Mr. Merren collaborated with attorney Juan Laureda of Pennsylvania to serve as defense counsel in a high profile bombing case, United States v. James R. Dye, in the Western District of Pennsylvania. Mr. Merren is proud of his many affiliations with various legal societies. Most notably, Mr. Merren is a member of the Federal Bar Association, is a “25 Year Continuous Member” of the Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association, and the National Criminal Defense Lawyers Association. Mr. Merren is privileged to be a founding member of ALTA. Mr. Merren is admitted to practice in the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans, LA, all United States District Courts of Texas, the United States District Court, Western Pennsylvania, the United States District Court for the Central District of Illinois, the United States District Court, Western District of Oklahoma, the United States District Court, District of New Mexico. At present, the primary concentrations of Merren Law Offices are state and federal criminal matters involving narcotics, violent crimes and consultation in various high profile criminal matters. In 2011, Merren Law Offices welcomed new associate attorney Ashley Merren Thomann, an honor graduate of both SMU and Texas Wesleyan School of Law in Fort Worth, Texas. Mr. Merren’s current engagements include several federal consultations throughout the South, as well as more leisurely matters consisting of enjoying the company of his family and living the East Texas country life on the weekends.
